How To Make Your Own Homemade Vanilla Extract

This is one of those things that once you know it, you’d kill yourself for not having found out about it 10 years ago. Don’t kill yourself just yet and share the knowledge with the younger ones now instead. In this post, we’ll show you How To Make Your Own Homemade Vanilla Extract.

Making your own homemade vanilla extract is so simple and fun to do with kids. It just takes 2 ingredients and a little bit of patience to squeeze the most out of those delicate vanilla beans. The beauty of vanilla extract is that you can throw a splash of it in pretty much anything from whipped creams, pastries preparations, dishes sauces (great with prawns, fish or seafood), cocktails in just the right quantity so there’s no waste.

To make 1 Liter of Vanilla extract you’ll need:

  • 1 Liter of Vodka (don’t bother with expensive one, cheap one will work just fine)
  • At least 100g of Grade B Bourbon vanilla beans
  • 1 Glass jar with sealed lid (no cork please, I know it looks great on those tiny bottles but not really good for conservation. Unless you like mould!)
  • 1 child assistant (Technically, it’s not child labour if you don’t pay them. You’re good!)
  • Lots of Love (No need to measure it, go crazy!)

SLICE at least 100g of Vanilla beans

Anything less than that is “vanilla-scented” NOT vanilla extract, no cheating!

Grade B Bourbon vanilla is perfect for that.

Place the sliced bean in a glass jar and pour the vodka into it until the beans are completely sunk.

That’s the hardest part. Patience! You’ll have to wait for at least 8 weeks to start consuming your extract. The longer you keep it, the better. It’ll get darker day after day. Give it a shake for the first 2 weeks. It starts to get really good after 3 months. If you can hold on for that long, it’ll be totally worth it. This extract will super charge your desserts and sauces with naturally sweet taste. Enjoy!
